SUMMARY:In Studio: Zinc Plate Lithography
DESCRIPTION:Zinc plate lithography is one of printmaking’s most expressive processes\, often described as the printmaker’s equivalent of drawing and painting. Artists work directly on a smooth metal plate using greasy drawing materials such as lithographic crayon\, pencil and liquid tusche\, creating marks that range from delicate lines and soft washes to rich\, velvety blacks. \nOver four weeks\, students will learn how to prepare a zinc plate\, draw on it using traditional lithographic materials\, chemically process the plate and print a small edition using the Takach Lithography press. The process works through the interaction of grease and water: greasy marks attract ink while damp areas of the plate repel it. This class welcomes artists of all levels. Beginners will receive clear\, step-by-step guidance\, while more experienced artists and printmakers will have the opportunity to explore lithographic mark-making and deepen their understanding of the process. \nLocation: Oolite Arts

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Dr. Deborah Willis at The Betsy
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Deborah Willis’ Reflections in Black: A Reframing (Liveright\, 2025) is an acclaimed collection of Black photography\, redefining our understanding of American history. Dr. Willis will be in conversation with Cornelius Tulloch and Joan Morgan.\n\n\n\nIn The Gallery \nThis fall\, Liveright celebrates the 25th anniversary of Dr. Deborah Willis’ Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers: A Reframing\, 1840 to the Present—a landmark publication that forever changed how America sees itself. First released in 2000\, Reflections in Black was the first single-volume history to center Black photographers as architects of the national image\, reframing the visual narrative of family\, identity\, and freedom across two centuries. \nNow\, Willis\, MacArthur Fellow\, curator\, and founder of NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture\, returns with Reflections in Black: A Reframing (pub: Nov 18). This breathtaking new edition juxtaposes photographs from the original volume with 130 new images by artists such as Carrie Mae Weems\, Renee Cox\, Allison Janae Hamilton\, Andre D. Wagner\, and Hank Willis Thomas. With a new foreword by Robin D. G. Kelley and a coda by Kalia Brooks\, it re-examines the power of photography to reclaim history at a moment when archives\, memory\, and representation are under renewed pressure. \nHosted by The Betsy Hotel\, Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Collective\, and NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture the afternoon will feature a small reception\, a panel of guest speakers\, and a signing with Dr. Willis. \nIn a year when questions of visibility and authorship dominate our cultural landscape\, Reflections in Black: A Reframing\, the 25th Anniversary edition feels more essential than ever—both a historical document and a living testament to the evolving language of Black photography. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \nDr. Deborah Willis is a prominent American artist\, curator\, and scholar\, currently a University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University (NYU). Her work focuses on African American photography\, visual culture\, and the history of Black people in America\, with extensive publications and exhibitions on these subjects. Willis is also the director of NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture and has received numerous honors\, including a MacArthur Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Anastasia Samoylova at The Betsy
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST TALK & BOOK SIGNING\n\n\n\nPRESENTED AS PART OF THE BETSY HOTEL’S MIAMI ART WEEK EVENTS 2025 \nAnastasia Samoylova’s Atlantic Coast (Aperture\, 2025) retraces Berenice Abbott’s 1954 photographic journey along the Eastern Seaboard\, documenting dislocation\, loss\, and a shifting American dream. Samoylova’s work will be exhibited and discussed. \nHosted in B Bar \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \nAnastasia Samoylova is an American artist (b. 1984\, Russia) who alternates between observational photography and studio practice. After relocating to Miami in 2016\, Samoylova began developing an immersive\, observational approach to photography. This led to her first monograph\, FloodZone\, a study of how environmental vulnerability is visualized in flood-prone communities. Her Floridas project continued this inquiry with a kaleidoscopic\, often contradictory portrait of the state’s layered cultural and political identity. In Image Cities (2023)\, she turned outward to global metropolises\, exploring the impact of media saturation on the urban landscape. \nHer recent solo exhibition Floridas: Anastasia Samoylova and Walker Evans was on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, from October 14\, 2024\, to May 11\, 2025.
